How To Listen - A Course In Mastery Day 8

Active listening has on amazing impact your ability to communicate as wis demonstrated by President John F Kennedy who focused on and remembered important things about others even in moments important to himself.

Dr Alessandra uses the term CARESS to describe a thumbnail sketch of good communication: Concentrate. block out everything else around you. focus on the person, blur out the background noise Acknowledge - Give the person your full attention, use good eye contact, nod , use vocal prompts.
Respond. Use empathy statements.
Empathy statements qualify what is said;
1. Attentiveness: I get the impression
2. Identify the emotion: that your so excited
3. Context: that you got all A's on your report card.

Often people who upset need nothing miore than to be recognized with an empathy statement anf then to vent with you as a sounding board.
Exercise Emotional control. Learn what triggers turn you off and cause you to stop listening (racial jokes? sexist slurs?)
Semsing Pay attention to non verbal cues (visual and vocal)
Structure Focus on the verbal content. Repeat back what is said, this clarifies the context and logical order of the information allowing you to be sure you understand the speakers intent.
